Materials:
A stone, a path to walk, something to write with, something to write on
Instructions:
Select a stone, trinket, or other talisman that feels right for this moment (feels like the feeling you’re having in this moment, or the one you’d like to have, etc.). Try not to look, but to feel it in your hand. Don’t overthink it, just grab something that fits in your palm.
Carry the stone and walk a path (preferably in nature) where you can look, see, smell, hear the life around you. What do you notice? Are the birds returning to the neighborhood? Does the cold air smell different than warm? Notice with each of your senses. Take as much time as you need (or as little as you want).
Notice the stone: Does it feel smooth or rough? Any sharp edges? Does it have a particular smell (or taste, if you’re into that kind of thing)?
Notice your thinking/feeling: When you return from your journey, how do you feel? Notice anything different than when you picked up the stone? How about the stone? Warmer? Smoother? More familiar? Do you want to set it down, or tuck it in your pocket and carry more today? Your core? Your legs?
If writing is accessible to you, you might try writing about how you felt before, during, and after this exercise. There’s a lot of power in writing, even if it’s just to yourself. Try it out (you can even use the 3-Minute Mental Makeover to give you some short questions to write down). Give yourself 5 minutes to write whatever comes to mind.
